Background
The country has faced the problems of poverty,
illiteracy, social and gender discrimination. This is the bitter experience that we are facing at present day even the country has high potential to be developed due to the natural resources and endowments we have.
Nepal has had a long tradition in which women have the designation of socially discriminated. From the beginning of history of Nepali women are regarded as goddess, and copartners of the male but in practice, they are not provided social rights as the men. If we are to genuinely deliver our promise to strengthen the horizons of all women in Nepal, we have to first ensure that women feel able to embrace their rights to equal citizenship at the level of every day practice .
Especially referring to women - widows had to compulsorily burn at the cremation with their husbands who have passed away - well known as "SHATI PRATHA" in Nepal. If they ignored to do so, they would have forcefully compelled by the patriarchal society with
Hindu religious dogma. However those practices and conservatisms were
eliminated; widows are not considered in well and respected manner till this time. The widows are taken as a helpless women to whom family and the whole society itself use to look discriminately but now with the some provisions a widow is granted to claim her part of property from the joint family after her husband's death and than that a widow can use such property after she gets
marriage. Similarly, on these days, Nepal is falling at a vicious cycle of war trauma. Since the war began before 9 years almost ten thousand (10,000) people have lost their lives.
The war is begetting us more widows than ever either from Maiost side or government side.
Widows are subjected to be discriminated in one side and have to bear so many problems socially and financially as well in other side . They have to send their children to school and have to bear all expenses of family. Lack of good philanthropic policies of government they have no any skills, endowments and
support for their well beings.
The widows are not preferably allowed to get next marriages and they have to pass their lives in single. and still they are unwelcome to their parent's house.
This is the need of an hour to help them who are severely suffered.
Nonetheless, the old people are also kept in the verge of socially
discrimination. They are not getting chance of due respect by the cause of family clashes, poverty , illiteracy and non- philanthropic policy of government even they have passed their lives for the service of family, society and nation as well.
On above grounds, the first and foremost step towards this field is most in our poor country Nepal.
We the pathfinders youths of society are keenly interested to explore in this field of new social service to help poor and helpless -widows and old people in our poor
country Nepal with the establishment of WOPAN which stands for
